Probiotics are bacterial supplements taken to increase the colonization of commensal bacteria in the gut. Acidophilus is one such probiotic, although individuals with intestinal damage, a weakened immune system, or overgrowth of intestinal bacteria should avoid supplementation (safety in pregnant women is also not yet known). A number of health issues are purported to benefit from supplementation with acidophilus, though there are multiple strains of lactobacilli, each with its own effect in particular conditions.
Medical studies have shown general benefits of supplementation for:
- Preventing C. difficile infection after antibiotic use
- Treating rotavirus associated diarrhea
- Treating vaginal infections
- Preventing necrotizing enterocolitis in premature infants
- Treating thrush and other yeast infections
