Taking a patient's T cells and engineering them to destroy leukemia cells has had success in three leukemia patients. The very small clinical trial was carried out by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. Using a virus to alter the cells and then inoculating the patients with the result allowed two of the three patients to live cancer-free for a year (and still counting).
The results are an important step forward in treating advanced cancers. Much larger studies are needed, but the proof of concept and how dramatic the results could be will help groups working on the cures receive funding.
