Synthetic genome development

In May 2010, synthetic biology took its first large step towards its aim of developing microbes for medical and environmental applications; researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute in Maryland announced that they had created the first cell with a synthetic genome – a genome designed by a computer with no specific parental or generational history.
